Jones Middle School Reader’s Rally Information 2009-2010
What is the Reader’s Rally? Each year, approximately 10 students are chosen to represent Jones Middle School at the Gwinnett County Reader’s Rally Event. The Reader’s Rally is like a quiz bowl competition based on the current Georgia Book Award Nominees. For the 2009-2010 school year, students who are interested will be asked to choose a set of 4 books from the 20 book list to read. Students will read their set more than once, answer questions, and attend book discussions to help them prepare for the competition. Students must have a parent signed contract and must not have a discipline record to be on the team. Any student who fails to meet standards academically or behaviorally will not be permitted to attend the Gwinnett Reader’s Rally (which means no N’s or U’s in effort or conduct in any class).
Who can participate? Any student who likes to read and is committed to reading and learning everything they can about the 4 books they are assigned.
The Jones Reading Bowl will be held in December. A combination of performance at this bowl as well as attendance at meetings, knowledge of individual sets, and participation during meetings will determine the final team that will proceed to the county competition.
Gwinnett Reader’s Rally will be held at the end of January on a Saturday. We will have between 5 and 10 students on the Jones team at the competition. More details will follow.
Does this cost me anything? If you plan to get started reading this summer, you may have to purchase the books from your set, if they are not available at the public library. Also, team members are asked to purchase T-shirts for $10. We will order T-shirts at the beginning of October.
Can I get started in the summer? Yes! We highly encourage you to start this summer on your reading. Email Ms. Richardson (the JMS media specialist) when you decide which set of books that you want to read. We must make sure that all sets are being read by at least 2 students. Reader’s Rally Contract 2009-2010
My child, ______________________________, is committed to reading the 4 books on the provided list and completing all of the required tasks. I understand that my child must read the assigned books, attend at least 90% of the meetings, and answer the written questions for each book. I also understand that the Reader’s Rally is extracurricular and that my child will not be able to participate if he/she does not meet academic or behavior expectations set by the team coaches. I understand that there is a possibility that my child may be eliminated from the Rally through the written test and later through the school competition.
